Two Impromptus

Two impromptus for piano have been written between November 2017 and July 2020, edited and re-worked March / April 2024. Both are strongly committed to their tonic with a few modulations that almost always resolve back (E minor impromptu ends in Eb major but still holds its main motif and development in Em). Both pieces relate to each other through A half diminished chord that used as a tension in the first impromptu and as a base chord in the second. Working on this couple I wanted to explore motivic development with limited harmony changes. I like to think about swaying water and ever-changing refections on its surface and the flow that always leads forward. Tempo marks and subdivisions should be treated loosely and overall feel should be relatively free. Melodic movement should guide the flow.
